The annual Magic Core Set had been temporarily abolished, but from July 20, 2018 onwards this tradition will be resumed and continued with the Core 2019 set. Three years earlier, Magic Origins was supposed to become the last Core set of all time, but some of the restructuring undertaken at that time did not fulfil its purpose and was therefore undone since then. Preconstructed decks allowed new players to learn Magic relatively easily, but the jump from there directly to the complicated expansion series seemed to be too large. The Core 2019 set is meant to close this gap with mechanically simpler cards. At the same time, however, Wizards also regains the option to easily reprint certain old cards into the standard format, which would not have fitted well with the themes of current expansion sets. In addition, it removes the pressure from the standard players to deal with collecting four sets per year. Now they have the choice to neglect the annual core set and focus on the three other sets instead.
